With all the information out there surrounding VOC’s, and air quality, the question has become, who is defining "green" for paint? The coatings industry is filled with third-party organizations that are trying to define what green means for coatings as well as other consumer products. So who are they and what are the differences? We've assembled the mission statements of the standard groups and have added some additional information to help you.
These standards focus on the materials that are used to manufacture the paint. The two main standards are as follows:
Founded in 1989, Green Seal provides science-based environmental certification standards that are credible, transparent, and essential in an increasingly educated and competitive marketplace. Our industry knowledge and standards help manufacturers, purchasers, and end users alike make responsible choices that positively impact business behavior and improve quality of life.
Benjamin Moore products that have been third party tested to meet or exceed Green Seal Standards:
Benjamin Moore Natura
Established in 1996 MPI is an Institute dedicated to the establishment of quality standards and quality assurance in the painting and coating application industries in the U.S.A. and Canada. In addition, in recent years, they have also added a green product certification known as MPI Green Performance.

These standards focus on what is emitted from the paint when you are using it. Here are a couple more:
The Collaborative for High Performance Schools is a non-profit organization dedicated to making schools better places to learn. CHPS was founded in 1999 as a collaboration of California’s major utilities to address energy efficiency in schools. The program quickly expanded to address all aspects of school design, construction and operation.
Benjamin Moore products that have been third party tested to meet or exceed CHPS standards:
Aura, Aura Bath and Spa, Natura, ben, Eco Spec WB
The mission of the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI) is to improve public health and quality of life through programs that improve indoor air.
